Protest in its dictionary definition is an expression of opposition to a decision or action. However, beyond its formal definition, it is primarily an emotional and organic act that produces an event of various meanings, characters, and forms.
The differences between various protests are evident. They are affected by the circumstances surrounding the protest: the protesting population, the location of the protest, factors that affect it or are affected by it. In term of architecture, this wide range of protests creates a lot of variety: The decision-making of the protesters creates the essence of the outcry, its influence, its intensity, and the new space that might be established in its wake.
Most of the protest acts are defiant and planned. At the same time there are protest acts that are created without prior planning and thoughts. After the learning process of the various defiance actions, the project found its home in the Florentine neighbourhood in south Tel Aviv, on the border of Jaffa. Today in this area, the public space includes great extremes - from enclosed complexes with private yards and guards, to garages, workshops of all kinds, and many buildings for preservation. The significant disconnect between the new construction and the existing neighbourhood is almost jarring to the eye.
The next step in planning the defiant action and its architecture was made by examining the various underprivileged populations and their integration into the urban space - these populations find it very difficult to integrate into spaces, and attempts to integrate these populations encounter difficult struggles with the locals.
Finally, the design includes housing capsules for street dwellers. Parasitic housing that adheres to the existing structure and covers the public space that is not currently in use.
